From Tribal to a Common Albanian Identity

By Kristo Frasheri

There were two principal components of the nationality for writers and chancellors of the early Middle Ages: the political and the religious community. The linguistic, ethnographic, historical and anthropological distinctions of different populations living in the same political and religious community carried no weight for them. All those subject to the Byzantine Empire which ruled by means of its state power and the authority of ecumenical church of Constantinople were neither Hellenes, nor Illyrians nor Thracians but only Romans (Romanaioi) for the Byzantines, and Greeks (Graeci) for the Latins. Likewise, the Slavs and non-Slavs subjects of the Bulgarian Empire and, as Christians under the Patriarchy of Oher were considered Bulgarians (Bulgari) by the Easterners and Westerners alike.

N. G. L. Hammond and Epirus

There has been a proliferation non professional essays on the internet and publications such as Wikipedia to prove the  greekness of Epiriots. These essays have utilized  N. L. G. Hammond’s opinions relating to the language the Epiriots spoke as their main source of reliance. In total disregard to the ancient written sources, available onomastic and archeologic data, the writers claim that Epirus was inhabited by Greek speaking tribes.

Since 1844 when the chauvinistic Serbian platform called ‘Nacertanja’, has been introduced on the first place, until now and the notorious Serbian propaganda has continuously aimed the repudiation of the Albanian autochthony in Kosova and Macedonia. That is all been done with the sole purpose, to legitimize their invasion plans on Albanian lands. It is exactly within this total propagandistic war where the modern Serbian’s myths emerge on, claiming that Kosova is the cradle of the Serbians and their culture.

” On the Autochthony of Albanians in Kosova and the Postulated Massive Serb Migration at the End of the XVIIth Century” by Selami Pulaha

Originally taken from: International Journal of Albanian Studies vol. 2, no. I (1997)

    1. INTRODUCTION

A major problem of the modern historiography of the Balkan countries during the last century is the matter of the auctochthony of the Albanians in Kosova. Another related issue which continues to remain at the foci of historiographic research is the presumed “massive migration” of the Serbs from this region at the end of the seventeenth century, as well as other supposedly massive migratory waves that took place in later centuries. In particular, there are poignant problems with Yugoslav historiography, and to a certain extent, with the historiography of other states bordering Albania and Kosova.

Kosova: the Albanians in Yugoslavia in light of historical documents: an essay, S. S. Juka, Waldon Press, 1984.

At present, nobody would think of considering the Slavs as the descendants of the Illyrians. Nonetheless, in the first half of the 19th century, when the nationalities problem – which before Napoleon was practically nonexistent – acquired a preeminent importance, the belief that the Illyrians were the ancestors of the Slavs was very strong.1 This conviction, which persisted in some circles until the turn of the century and even beyond, evoked at that time much fervor and exaltation. These feelings may be conveyed by a passage taken from Edmund Spencer’s “Turkey, Russia, the Black Sea, and Circassia” (London, 1854):

    Who were the Chaones?

It’s really becoming boring to read articles in Wikipedia that are poisoned and twisted by the nationalist Greek propaganda. This does not surprise us much because it is a known fact that Greece sponsors these kinds of campaigns to promote the ‘Hellenic’ past of Macedonia and Epirus, both non-Greek regions that were conquered by Greece in 1913. As a matter of fact, the Greek government, as per their revelations, spent over 130 million US dollars from 1989 to 1993 in buying reporters who will promote the “Hellenism” of Macedonia abroad and the “macedonization” of Greece at home. This case was first reported by Athens based Eleftherotypia in 1994.

One of the most contradictory questions regarding prehistoric southern Balkans is the frontier between southern Illyria i.e Epirus, Macedon, Thrace and Northern Hellas. Because of the lack of meticulous sources we are inclined to analyze in detail both of two prevalent views about the abovementioned boundaries. The northern boundaries of classical Hellas are not easy to be determined with precision because they always have changed northwardly or southwardly.
